For people who are new to the world of medical Marijuana, one of the most intimidating aspects can be figuring out how much to take. When you are just starting out, you might not have any frame of reference to understand exactly how much a gram is, and how much that gram will affect you. How you consume marijuana can have a huge effect on how you experience the high as well.
Don’t let the complexities of marijuana scare you away. The fact is that figuring out how marijuana affects you just might be the most fun you’ve ever had in your life! We’ve created this guide to give you an understanding of how different forms of cannabis can affect people differently, and to help demystify the dosages in which they are measured.
Note: If you have never consumed medical marijuana before, take it slow. Start with the smallest dosage and work up from there. Once you find the right dose for your body, you will have the rest of your life to enjoy the benefits.
Ways to Consume
First, what is THC? Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the compound in marijuana that produces the psychoactive effects, or the “high” that is most associated with the plant. Because the cannabis flower can be processed in so many ways, people have come up with a variety of ways to extract the THC so that it can be experienced in a variety of ways, such as:
● Smoking – Because the joint is such an icon in our culture, this is how many people can reference a dose of marijuana in their minds even if they have never smoked before: most joints contain a little bit less than 1 gram of crushed flower. The good thing about smoking marijuana is that the effects are felt almost immediately. Start slow, a puff at a time, and wait a few minutes to gauge how you feel before continuing. Before you’ve built up a tolerance, a single gram is much more than enough to get you high.
● Edibles – In contrast to smoking, when consuming edible cannabis it takes much longer to feel the effects, and those effects can be far more potent. The THC Edible Dosage is calculated differently than dry herb. 1-5 milligrams (mg) of THC is an appropriate dose for a beginner (again, it is recommended to start small and increase as needed), while experienced users will probably want a dose closer to 10mg or more. The effects also last much longer when thc is consumed this way.
● Vaping – Similar to smoking, vaporizing cannabis produces psychoactive effects that are felt almost immediately. Both dry herbs and specially made oils can be vaporized, though the correct device must be used. The dose used to vaporize dry herb will be similar to smoking, while oil is measured in milligrams.
Dabbing – When thc is extracted into a cannabis concentrate like a wax or shatter, this substance can be dropped onto a heated nail, producing a vapor that can be inhaled – this is known as “dabbing.” Dabs are high potency and produce a very intense high almost immediately, so the doses are much smaller than when smoking flower. Start with a very small dab – about the size of a grain of rice – and work up from there.
