Indica vs. Sativa

Far from being a one-size-fits-all substance, marijuana can come in two distinctive strains: Indica and Sativa. Each of these strains has its own unique characteristics which facilitate very different experiences for users.

Indica

A strain known mostly for its sedative effects, Indica originated in India, Northern Pakistan, Nepal, and Afghanistan; a closer look at this strain’s leaves and growth patterns reveal why. In addition to its physical distinctions, there are some other important characteristics of Indica to note:

  • Shorter plant with broader, dark-colored leaves — Better equipped to withstand the ravages of a cooler climate, complemented by shorter growth cycles.
  • Body high — Indica creates a sense of physical relaxation in the consumer.
  • Better used as a relaxation and sleep aid — Because of its physical effects, Indica can be particularly useful in inspiring overarching calmness and facilitating sleep.
  • Typically used at night — Since it is so often used to assist with sleep, Indica is most often consumed at night.
  • Popular strains include Dos-Si-Dos and Purple Punch.

Sativa

A foil to Indica, Sativa is known to have more energizing effects that primarily exert themselves on the mind rather than the body. Hailing from Central and South America, this strain has clear physical distinctions and a range of other easily recognizable features:

  • Taller plant with thinner leaves — Sativa is sometimes described as looking “airier” than Indica; this is, perhaps, because it comes from a warmer climate where the growing season is longer.
  • Head high — This strain is known to inspire a more psychological response, which is why it’s popular among consumers who suffer from anxiety and depression.
  • Better for increased energy — Sativa generally gives users the sensation of feeling more creative, or more interested in focusing a subject at hand.
  • Typically used during the day — Because it affects the mind, it can be difficult for consumers of Sativa to fall asleep if they use it at night.
  • Popular strains include Sour Diesel and Jack Herer.

It’s important to stay educated about the substances you choose to take, and while there’s more to finding the perfect flavor for you than just choosing between Indica and Sativa, knowing the difference between the two is a great place to start.
